I bet many of you are like me, signed up to KiwiSaver many many years ago, may have left regular employment at some stage, maybe go on maternity leave and not return to work, or even started your own business or become self employed and have no idea how or if KiwiSaver even works for you now.
I didn’t even know where it was sitting, who was managing it, how much was in it or if I could even continue to contribute if I wasn’t employed?
Well after overhearing a friend talk about her KiwiSaver contributions and their growth (and she was a business owner not an employee) I was like – WHAT you still contribute? Tell me more! She mentioned Generate as her preferred KiwiSaver provider and that she had advised her employees to talk to them also (instead of going with the common “default” option).
I was annoyed with myself that for over 5 years I hadn’t paid any attention to my KiwiSaver, didn’t know the balance, who the fund manager was and that I wasn’t being proactive in making it work for me! So I went home and googled them!
I liked what I saw, but got busy and didn’t do anything about it.
UNTIL recently my manager came to me to discuss a partnership a little outside the box – she mentioned Generate, I was like “ummm yes! I have just heard my friend in business talk about them and would love to explore further”.
So longer story shorter (I’ll go into more details when I chat about this on FB live – as I really believe we all need to know about it AND we all need to make sure our KiwiSaver funds are working for us!) – I said yes I wanna meet them and find out more.
So I made an appointment with Jeremy (one of the advisors) – even though I was flat out busy he assured me it would only take 15-20 mins and we could meet wherever was convenient for me.
So he travelled all the way over to the suburbs, we planned to meet at a cafe that ended up being closed and so the next closest venue was the Pub! hahaha. KiwiSaver, a conversation that most people think would be better had over a wine or beer any way – haha. But no we didn’t and to my delight a drink was definitely not needed.
The simplicity of this conversation, the ease of understanding what Generate offer and what they could do with my fund (once it was found in the KiwiSaver black hole!) and learning about the Conservative Fund, Growth Fund and Focused Growth Fund options was enough for me to say “stop talking and sign me up!”
Oh but wait! I don’t work, I don’t have a regular job, I’m not even employed.
This was the kicker for me – regardless of all that, I can still contribute $20 per week to my fund which will still make me entitled to the maximum government contribution (of up to $521 every year). No brainer really!
So with us already home owners, our focus with KiwiSaver is obviously saving for our retirement. I chose to go with the Focused Growth Fund and finding out that their Focused Growth Fund ranked 1st for performance in 2017 with 23.93% growth vs 16.28% average growth – made the choice feel even better.
I’m def one of those people that if I love something and it feels right, I want to make it happen asap – so I made Jeremy sign me up and transfer my KiwiSaver funds immediately.
We did it all at the pub – I had my license on me, found proof of address with my power bill in my emails, IRD number online – and with his sign up tools, it was seamless, paperless and stress free!
A few days later I got this txt! YAY they found my funds, they are taking over the management, I’m contributing and the growth is starting.
I log into my Generate profile easily to see what my account is doing and can view all the investments – it’s actually really interesting.
So to wrap it up – If you have stopped contributing to your KiwiSaver for whatever reason, I urge you to talk with the team at Generate and explore your options for kick starting it again. I feel so good about being proactive in my plans for retirement as well as utilising a great scheme like KiwiSaver.
